Preventing Duplicate Conversions in Google Ads

4 min read · Last updated

Accurate Smart Bidding (tROAS / tCPA) depends on counting each real customer purchase exactly once. Here is how OneClick prevents duplicate conversions automatically — and what to check in your Google Ads account if your reported conversions look 2x higher than Shopify orders.

1. Built-In Protection Inside OneClick

  1. Order-ID Transaction Deduplication: Every purchase event sent by OneClick attaches your unique Shopify order.id as the Google Ads transaction_id (oid). If a customer refreshes or bookmarks their order-status / thank-you page, Google Ads automatically deduplicates the repeat hit.
  2. Primary vs. Secondary Goal Separation: OneClick sets Purchase as Primary and keeps Begin Checkout, Add to Cart, and Page View as Secondary so Google Ads never sums cart views + checkouts + purchases together inside your main Conversions column.
  3. Automatic Dual-Surface Mutual Exclusion: OneClick’s storefront architecture includes automatic safeguards (customPixelPreferred and _ocg_cp_active) so the Zero-Paste Storefront Tag and the Custom Pixel never double-fire against one another.

2. Three External Causes of Double Counting (Checklist)

If Google Ads shows roughly double the conversions of your actual Shopify orders, check these three places:

Check A: Competing “Primary” Purchase Actions in Google Ads

If you also installed the native Google & YouTube channel app or imported Google Analytics 4 (GA4) purchase events into Google Ads, both conversion actions may be set to Primary at the same time.

  • Fix: In Google Ads → Goals → Conversions → Summary, expand the Purchase goal category. Keep one Purchase action set to Primary (OneClick) and switch competing GA4 or legacy Purchase actions to Secondary (Observe only) — do not delete historical actions if campaigns are still learning, just set them to Secondary.

Check B: Leftover Hardcoded Tags in theme.liquid or Checkout Additional Scripts

Stores that ran Google Ads prior to Shopify Checkout Extensibility often have manual gtag('event', 'conversion', ...) snippets pasted into:

  • Shopify Admin → Settings → Checkout → Order status page additional scripts (deprecated), or
  • Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes → Edit code → theme.liquid.
  • Fix: Remove hardcoded AW-XXXXXXXXX conversion snippets from legacy Additional Scripts or theme.liquid so OneClick is the sole sender for its conversion action.

Check C: Both Custom Pixel and Storefront Tag Connected Manually

If your store previously pasted a Custom Pixel in Shopify Admin → Settings → Customer events and later enabled the Theme App Embed manually, open OneClick → Setup in Shopify Admin (or reach out via Open Support Chat / [email protected]) and we will verify your active surface in seconds.
